Histo
ry
B. R. Coad
and
C. E. Woolman
were working together in order to develop a
solution
to the infestation of cotton crops by the
boll weevil
.
They came up with the idea to scatter, or "dust"
insecticide powder
from the air onto the plants.
The
crop-dusting
operation,
Huff Daland Dusters
was founded in
Macon, Georgia
in
1924
.
This operation formed the
roots for Delta
, and was the
first
ever
commercial agricultural flying company
at the time.
The headquarters of Huff Daland Dusters were moved from Macon to Monroe, Louisiana one year later.
The company's services extended to Peru in 1927.
When
Woolman
returned from his Peru, he
purchased
Huff Daland in 1928 and
renamed
it
Delta Air Service
.
Catherine Fitzgerald
, secretary, came up with the new
name
that referred to the Mississippi River Region.
In
1929
, Delta began operating their
first passenger
flights
fro
m Texas to Mississippi.
In 1930, the company was
renamed
again to
Delta Air Corporation
, and
expanded to include service to Atlanta.
Unfortunately, Delta failed to obtain a
commercial airmail contract
, and the company was forced to
temporarily stop
its passenger service.
In 1934, Delta secured a
contract
for Air Mail Route 24 between Dallas and Charleston, South Carolina.
The company
resumed
its passenger flight services that year and began operating under the new name, Delta Air Lines.
Delta's
headquarters
were moved back to Georgia and to Atlanta in 1941.
In the 1940's, Delta's
growth
was
delayed
as America entered
World War II
.
They had to shift their focus to helping the war effort.
The company's
official corporate nam
e
becomes
Delta Air Lines, Inc.
in
1945
.
In the 1960's, Delta begins the transition to
jets
.
A
new logo
was also created that represented the graceful swoop of a jet's wing.
Delta's
first nonstop flight
was flown in 1961 from Atlanta to Los Angeles.
C. E. Woolman passed away in 1966 and is succeeded by
Charles H. Dolson
.
By the 1970's, Delta had an
all-jet passenger airplane fleet
.
Delta began transatlantic service in 1978, and transpacific service in 1987.
SkyTeam
, a global alliance between AeroMexico, Air France, Korean Air, and Delta is launched in 2000.
Now
In 2009, Delta celebrated
80 years
of excellent passenger service.
New plans to improve customer experience were announced in 2010.
Delta plans to invest over $2 billion into
renovations
like new full-flat beds, in-seat video on all wide body aircraft, and more First Class seating.
